Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1 Adds Official VergeOS Support, Simplifying VMware Alternative Migrations

Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1 now officially supports VergeOS, giving organizations evaluating VMware alternatives a simpler path to enterprise backup and recovery.

VergeIO, developer of the VergeOS private cloud operating system, announced the integration on August 26, 2026. VergeOS is now available as a supported virtualization platform inside the Veeam console through the Veeam Plug-in for Universal Hypervisor API.

For backup administrators, the practical change is straightforward. There is no separate driver to configure or workaround to document.

Adding VergeOS Takes Just a Few Steps

The integration is designed around the workflow backup administrators already know in Veeam.

An administrator opens Add Server, selects Virtualization Platforms, chooses VergeOS, and adds the VergeOS Manager to the inventory.

That is the process.

Previously, VergeOS environments could be protected through Veeam’s oVirt KVM driver. While that provided a path to backup, it introduced an operational complication: administrators had to understand why a VergeOS environment was being connected through a driver associated with another virtualization platform.

Official support removes that ambiguity.

With VergeOS appearing directly in the Veeam platform list, administrators can use a familiar backup platform without creating a special-case procedure around the hypervisor.

Removing a Backup Objection to VMware Migration

Backup and recovery can become one of the practical obstacles when organizations evaluate alternatives to VMware.

Infrastructure teams may be willing to change the underlying virtualization platform. However, they are often less willing to redesign established backup, recovery, retention, and compliance processes at the same time.

The VergeOS integration addresses that concern by allowing organizations to continue using Veeam Backup & Replication for protecting VergeOS workloads.

The integration therefore addresses more than platform compatibility. It reduces the operational change associated with moving workloads to a VMware alternative.

Two Layers of Data Protection

VeeIO positions Veeam support as complementary to the protection capabilities already built into VergeOS.

VergeOS provides infrastructure-level capabilities including Virtual Data Center snapshots, cross-site replication through ioReplicate, immutable checkpoints through ioFortify, and node failure absorption through ioGuardian.

These capabilities address broader infrastructure recovery scenarios such as node failure, site loss, and environment rollback.

Veeam adds the granular backup and recovery functions expected from an enterprise data protection platform.

That includes file and application restoration, database recovery, and long-term retention policies.

The distinction is important for organizations designing a comprehensive resilience strategy. Infrastructure-level recovery and enterprise backup are not necessarily competing functions. They can address different recovery requirements within the same environment.

The Hardware Economics Behind the Migration

The announcement also comes as infrastructure costs remain an important consideration for organizations planning virtualization changes.

According to TrendForce data cited by VergeIO, conventional DRAM contract prices increased sharply during the first quarter of 2026. Server DRAM prices are also expected to increase further during the third quarter.

This creates an additional consideration for organizations replacing VMware infrastructure.

A virtualization platform migration does not necessarily have to become a hardware refresh. VergeIO argues that VergeOS can run on existing servers, potentially allowing organizations to separate the software decision from a major hardware purchase.

VergeOS also uses global inline deduplication to reduce the memory footprint associated with workloads. VergeIO says this can help extend the useful life of existing DDR4-based infrastructure.

For enterprises managing infrastructure budgets, that distinction can materially affect the economics of migration.

What the Integration Means for Backup Administrators

The most significant change may be less about new functionality and more about removing friction.

A backup administrator evaluating VergeOS no longer needs to ask:

“Which workaround or driver should I use?”

The answer is simply to select VergeOS from the supported virtualization platforms in Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1.

That makes the operational workflow easier to explain, document, train, and support.

It also gives infrastructure teams a clearer answer when backup compatibility becomes part of a VMware migration assessment.

Availability and Version Requirements

Official VergeOS support is available now with Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1, beginning with release build 13.1.0.411.

The integration requires VergeOS 26.1.7 or later.

According to VergeIO, Veeam is currently the only backup platform validated with VergeOS. Other platforms implementing Veeam’s Universal Hypervisor API are architecturally compatible, while VergeIO says additional certifications will be prioritized according to customer demand.

Live Demonstration Will Show Backup and Recovery

VergeIO and Veeam will demonstrate the integration in a live session on September 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM ET / 11:00 AM PT.

The session will demonstrate adding a VergeOS environment to Veeam, running the first backup, and recovering a workload. It will also include a question-and-answer session.

Organizations evaluating VergeOS can use the session to see the integration from an administrator’s perspective rather than simply reviewing compatibility documentation.

A Smaller Barrier to VMware Alternative Adoption

Virtualization migrations are rarely decided on the hypervisor alone.

Organizations also need confidence in backup, recovery, security, operational procedures, skills, and existing infrastructure investments.

Official VergeOS support in Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1 addresses one of those questions directly.

For the backup administrator, the change is deliberately uncomplicated: select VergeOS, add the manager, and begin building the protection policy.

That simplicity could prove valuable for organizations that want to change their virtualization platform without simultaneously changing the way they protect their data.
