Project Elixir: Brine to Blue Energy – UAE’s First Circular Pilot

Brine to Blue Energy: UAE’s Bold Step Towards Circular Innovation

In a world racing toward sustainability, innovation becomes the most powerful currency. The UAE has now made a bold move. MediSun Energy and EMSTEEL have teamed up to launch Project Elixir — the country’s first pilot that transforms desalination brine into blue energy and magnesium carbonate.

Turning Industrial Waste into Value

Desalination is vital in arid regions. However, it creates brine — a highly saline by-product. Traditionally, industries treat brine as waste. That approach not only wastes resources but also harms marine ecosystems.

But now, MediSun Energy offers a different perspective. The Singapore-based company specializes in integrated brine management. Through its partnership with EMSTEEL, a leading UAE steelmaker, they are rewriting the rules. Together, they will turn brine into clean energy and usable materials.

What Is Project Elixir?

Project Elixir is not just a pilot. It’s a proof of possibility. It introduces a circular industrial model, where waste becomes wealth. It’s being installed at EMSTEEL’s steel business unit in Abu Dhabi.

Two pioneering systems from MediSun will lead this change:

  1. WEGen RED System – It treats 500 cubic meters of brine daily. It generates “blue energy” using reverse electrodialysis (RED). At the same time, it consumes less energy than traditional methods.
  2. WEGen Green Pilot – It processes 30 cubic meters of brine per day. This system captures CO₂ and creates up to 300 kg of magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃). That’s a low-carbon material EMSTEEL can use in green steel production.

A CX Revolution in Heavy Industry

Although this might seem like an engineering feat, at its heart lies a CX transformation. Why? Because customer expectations are shifting.

Now, customers — whether individual or institutional — demand sustainability. They want their products to reflect environmental responsibility. Steel buyers, construction firms, and governments all seek lower emissions.

This project delivers just that. EMSTEEL customers will soon have access to low-carbon steel made using recovered materials. And that means a better product experience for all stakeholders.

The Power of Collaboration

Every innovative project needs support. In this case, ADQ stepped in with strong backing. The AED 100 million R&D fund, launched in 2022, fuels this initiative. ADQ’s Growth Lab connects innovators, funders, and builders across critical sectors.

This synergy accelerates innovation while creating tangible results. It also reaffirms the UAE’s commitment to climate action, resource efficiency, and industrial modernization.

Direct Benefits for EMSTEEL Customers

Customers of EMSTEEL stand to gain significantly. Here’s how:

  • Sustainable Steel Products: Steel made with lower emissions and greener inputs.
  • Better Compliance: Easier alignment with ESG targets and green procurement policies.
  • Brand Differentiation: Access to environmentally responsible materials enhances brand perception.

Moreover, the transformation doesn’t disrupt existing operations. That’s crucial for customer trust. MediSun will handle the pilot’s engineering, installation, and operations. EEIC (Emirates Electrical & Instrumentation Company) will support local assembly and integration.

Industry Voices: A New Era Begins

The announcement carried weighty endorsements from both partners.

Eng. Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, Group CEO of EMSTEEL, said:

“This collaboration with MediSun Energy marks a significant step in redefining industrial sustainability. Project Elixir reflects our commitment to green steel and supports national goals for innovation and circularity.”

Meanwhile, Dusun Kim, CEO of MediSun Energy, added:

“This pilot is a breakthrough. It shows how we can turn brine waste into clean power and green materials. We’re proud to lead this initiative with EMSTEEL.”

Their words echo the broader narrative — that innovation, sustainability, and customer value go hand in hand.

Why This Matters for the Future

There’s no denying it — climate change demands urgent solutions. But often, industries feel cornered between progress and sustainability. Project Elixir challenges that mindset. It proves industries can grow and decarbonize at once.

Additionally, it boosts the UAE’s global standing. With this move, the UAE demonstrates leadership not just in oil and gas, but in clean tech and circular economy solutions.

What Sets This Apart

You might ask — why is this different from other sustainability projects?

Here are four key reasons:

  • First-of-its-kind: No other pilot in the UAE converts brine to both energy and material at this scale.
  • Circular Model: This is not linear production. It’s regenerative and self-sustaining.
  • Multiple Outcomes: The project delivers clean energy, CO₂ reduction, and usable industrial inputs.
  • Cross-Industry Impact: It connects water, energy, and steel sectors — creating a ripple effect.

How Will Customers See the Change?

Soon, EMSTEEL’s clients may notice:

  • New certifications on product sustainability.
  • Updated product documentation reflecting reduced carbon footprints.
  • Faster procurement approval from green-focused buyers and regulators.

For MediSun’s future partners, this serves as a blueprint. Imagine similar projects across desalination plants, cement factories, or chemical plants. That’s the vision.

What’s Next?

Installation begins mid-2025. Operations will continue without disruption to daily production. Once validated, this model could scale rapidly. MediSun has already hinted at interest from other regions.

As demand for sustainable solutions rises, this technology has immense potential. It could become a core component of decarbonization strategies in the Middle East and beyond.

Final Thoughts

In today’s industrial landscape, customer experience goes beyond product quality. It includes ethics, sustainability, and impact. With Project Elixir, MediSun Energy and EMSTEEL offer all three.

They transform waste into value, challenge norms, and deliver what modern customers expect — responsibility, innovation, and purpose.

So the next time someone asks, “What’s in your steel?”, you may answer, “Brine, reimagined.”
