Student Experience

Q1. Dr. Thimmappa, how would you define ‘student experience’ in the context of pre-university education, and why is it critical today?

BHST: The student experience encompasses the many different aspects of student life including academic, intellectual, emotional, social, cultural, sporting, and artistic interests.  It is increasingly critical as it directly impacts educational success, institutional reputation, and long-term student success. A positive student experience fosters a conducive environment, leading to high scores and long-term success. It also influences student engagement and satisfaction, which can lead to continued higher education. Further, a strong student experience enhances organizational reputation, attracting more enrolments. Finally, prioritizing learner experience helps in holistic development and preparation for diverse settings.

Q2. Alliance Pre-University College offers integrated coaching for competitive exams. How does this shape the academic journey and experience for students?

BHST: Integrated coaching programs are coupled with regular board studies at APUC. This can significantly influence a student’s academic journey and overall experience. They offer a structured approach to learning, reduce time constraints, and provide access to specialized learning resources, practice tests, advanced learning tools, experienced faculty, targeted guidance, and competitive learning environments. This integrated approach can lead to enhanced subject comprehension, improved time management, and a more holistic personality development, allowing students to focus on their studies. The integrated approach allows the students to apply theoretical concepts/ideas/principles in practical question settings of competitive examinations. This approach also helps them to develop a competitive mindset to achieve their educational goals and gives them the confidence to face life beyond the classroom.

Key Touchpoints

Q3. What are some of the key touchpoints where you believe CX is most impacted—admissions, academic support, mentorship, infrastructure?

BHST: The most impactful touchpoints shaping the learner experience include admissions, academic support, m*entorship, and infrastructure. Admissions and the initial onboarding process set the tone for a student’s experience that influences their perception of the institution. Academic support like resources and assistance plays a crucial role in student engagement. Mentorship from faculty can significantly impact student motivation and build their networks. Finally, physical and intellectual infrastructure such as a library, campus facilities, science laboratories, technology use, and faculty shapes the overall environment that enhances the learning experience to thrive academically.

Q4. Can you tell us more about how Alliance College ensures personalized career counselling and guidance?

BHST: To ensure personalized career counseling and guidance APUC offers a variety of resources and support systems such as individual counseling sessions with career advisors, and workshops on career exploration and job search skills. Counselors can assist students in choosing different career options depending on their interests, skills, and career goals. Career exploration workshops on specific themes can provide an overview of various career paths. Resume and interview preparation workshops further equip them to explore different career opportunities. Industrial/field visits provide insights into specific industries and career opportunities. By offering a comprehensive approach to career and higher education counseling, APUC helps students make informed decisions about their future and prepares them for achieving goals in their chosen fields.

Holistic Development

Q5. Holistic development is a strong pillar in your education model. How do sports, cultural activities, and collaborative spaces contribute to the student experience?

BHST: Sports, cultural activities, and collaborative environments enrich the student experience by fostering overall development. These extracurricular activities promote physical and mental health and valuable social and life skills. Sports activities promote physical fitness such as strength, stamina, endurance, and flexibility, reduce stress, and improve concentration. Cultural activities and exposure to diverse cultures foster communication, creative expression, intercultural understanding, empathy, the spirit of teamwork, and a sense of belonging. Collaborative environments enhance the teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving skills of students. A dynamic learning environment incorporating these elements will promote physically fit, emotionally intelligent, and socially adept individuals and good global citizens.

Q6. With digital transformation influencing every field, how is Alliance PU College using technology to enhance learning and engagement?

BHST: We implement online learning platforms and personalized learning paths in addition to conventional classroom instruction as a part of the blended learning model to enhance learning outcomes and engagement. An enterprise resource planning (ERP) system incorporating a learning management system (LMS) helps us to streamline various administrative tasks such as course registration, student record management, examination conduction, and result analysis. These platforms facilitate online communication, project discussions, and feedback from faculty and students. This approach improves engagement and retention as technology allows students to learn at their own pace according to their learning styles and monitor progress.

Scholarship Structure

Q7. Merit-based scholarships play an important role in motivation. How does the college’s scholarship structure reflect your commitment to CX?

BHST: Our scholarship framework for top performers in the tenth standard public examination reflects a commitment to a superior learning experience by recognizing and rewarding outstanding academic merit. These merit-based scholarships motivate meritorious students to pursue academic excellence and personal progress. It can also contribute to a competitive learning environment. Merit scholarships are powerful motivators to strive for high academic standards and talent development. Recognizing and rewarding excellence can boost their self-confidence, fostering a sense of accomplishment. Positive reinforcement can lead to continued excellence. This will open up more opportunities for internships, graduate programs, and career advancement. Attracting and retaining top students is a challenge as there are more choices of colleges for such students.

Q8. What are some of the student or parent feedback initiatives in place that help you continuously improve the experience?

BHST: Formal and informal feedback methods are adopted to get feedback from students and parents to continuously improve the learner experience. Collected feedback is analyzed and the changes are implemented based on the in-depth insights derived. Online or paper-based structured assessment of each faculty is carried out on the various aspects of the educational experience. Regular parent-teacher meetings are conducted to engage in discussions on student progress, gather feedback on practically feasible improvements to college operations, and address specific concerns. The changes implemented continuously regarding teaching methods, college policies, and other aspects of the educational experience are informed to students and parents to ensure transparency.

Biggest CX Challenges

Q9. As someone leading an institution focused on transformation, what are the biggest CX challenges in education today?

BHST: The most pressing challenge of delivering a student-centric learning experience is creating a conducive environment, considering diverse learning styles, and different levels of prior knowledge/skills, adapting customized teaching techniques, and fostering a sense of personalized learning experience within the classroom. Addressing diverse learning needs including learning gap analysis, scope to student voice and choice, developing self-directed learning skills instead of a sage on-stage lecturing technique, teacher role adaptation, resource constraints, and systemic inequalities is essential.

Q10. Lastly, what’s your vision for Alliance Pre-University College’s role in shaping CX-led educational models in India?

BHST: Colleges can adopt a student-centric approach, leveraging technology, and focusing on counseling services to enhance the overall learner/customer experience. This involves learner-centric design, leveraging technology to personalize experiences, learner relationship management, providing personalized guidance, access to online resources, and focusing on advisory services, considering the student’s academic, personal, and social needs. It is essential to foster a student-centric culture (heutagogy vs pedagogy) that enhances the learning experience, improves retention, and creates a more engaging educational experience.
